Colt, First Samurai - May (Ghostzapper)

We started the year with goals of getting our first wins at Oaklawn Park & Saratoga. Well, we got that win at Oaklawn a couple of weeks ago, and now we added this big, strong 2yo colt to strengthen up the New York barn heading into Saratoga! We went to the OBS 2yo In Training sale and came away with a First Samurai colt out of the Ghostzapper mare, May.

We worked with our bloodstock agent, Frank Alosa, and our NY trainer, Mark Hennig, to nail down this awesome 2yo that breezed in :10 flat and has a great pedigree with a family that has produced multiple stakes winners. He was a STEAL at his $45K price tag. Here's a look at his breeze in Ocala...

What We Liked About Him & Game Plan

- We loved his breeze! For a bigger 2yo, he ran his :10.and :33.4 gallop out with a great stride and did it very professionally.

- He's got great size to him, with strong shoulders and chest. As an April foal, he still has some room to grow a bit.

- He was a highlighted sales prospect by our Pedigree Specialist, Jessica Tugwell. You can read her full analysis below.

- Our 2yo colt has shipped to Lynwood Stables in Ocala where he'll get two weeks off from training and then slowly get back to it. We're planning to ship to New York in early June to start preparing for his likely debut at Saratoga this summer.

UNNAMED- c. First Samurai - May (Ghostzapper)

Our newest addition to Little Blue Bird Stables is quite possibly the most exciting prospect we've added to the stable in my time with LBB. He's a son of First Samurai, a terribly underrated stallion who gets 76% starters from foals and 73% winners from starters. His foals make an average of 17.8 starts and earn an average of $88,610 each, so he's the perfect stallion to infuse durability into this mare, an unraced daughter of Ghostzapper named May.

Our colt is the first foal from his dam, who is a half-sister to a graded stakes placed runner by War Front out of a full sister to champion Blame. This is a massive female family going back to the great mare Special, who is the tail-female ancestor of 53 stakes winners, including 15 G1 winners. This includes the likes of Sadler's Wells, Corinthian, and Wrote. Since 2011, 34 of the 630 starters tracing to Special have been stakes winners (5.4%). First Samurai himself is the sire of three stakes winners from this colt's fourth dam, Bound, including G3 Iowa Oaks winner Size and G3 Cornhusker Handicap winner Carve. The cross of First Samurai's sire Giant's Causeway over the Special tail-female line has produced four stakes winners in 17 starters (23.5%).

In addition to the massive female family this colt hails from, the sire line crosses involved here are very strong. The cross of Giant's Causeway over Ghostzapper has produced three stakes winners in 29 starters (10.3%), including G1 winner Up to The Mark, and the cross of Giant's Causeway over Arch has produced five stakes winners in 68 starters (7.4%).
